- Abstract: The impact of nutrients supplementation and temperature on the fermentability of sugar cane bagasse hydrolysate by using three different yeasts strains (Kluyveromyces marxianus Y-6860; Saccharomyces cerevisiae PE-2 and Sheffersomyces stipitis Y-7124) was assessed. Sugar cane bagasse was submitted to the alkaline-sulfite pretreatment followed by enzymatic hydrolysis. The hydrolysate obtained containing glucose (31 g/L) and xylose (16 g/L) was used as carbon source. For all yeasts evaluated the nutrients addition to the hydrolysate was beneficial for the fermentative performance, regardless of temperature. Under the best conditions (hydrolysate with nutrients at 30 °C), the highest ethanol yield was achieved with K. marxianus and S. stipitis (YP/S = 0.48 g/g) followed by S. cerevisiae (YP/S = 0.44 g/g). However, only S. stipitis was able to consume xylose completely and increased ethanol concentration by 46%. When the hydrolysate was supplemented with glucose up to 100 g/L, all three yeasts demonstrated ability to ferment high glucose concentrations. These results support the idea that nutrients supplementation is required for hydrolysate fermentation and that the yeast S. stipitis is a promising candidate to produce ethanol from glucose and xylose from sugar cane bagasse hydrolysate.
