- Abstract: The implementation of biosurfactant production in the context of biorefineries is a viable alternative for the replacement of synthetic surfactants. The advantages that these biomolecules offer, such as biodegradability and production from renewable substrates, make these biomolecules interesting for various industries, for example petrochemicals, cosmetics, food, and agrochemicals, among others. Although there is a growing demand, the cost of production of most biosurfactants still does not allow for their large-scale production and commercialization. This chapter provides an overview of the production of solid-state fermentation biosurfactants from renewable and low-cost raw materials. In addition, it highlights the possibility of pretreatment of biomass to ensure the best use of nutrients as well as the characteristics of the microorganisms that are used for this purpose. Likewise, it addresses the main challenges of solid-state fermentation as a promising fermentation process.
